Towing Issues: towing ford ranger 4 down, blue ox, aluminum bar

Question
annual dinghy guide shows rangers w/ 5 spd manual xmissions ok to tow 4 down up to 55mph back to 2002.  is that also true for early 90's models?  my 2004 23' bt cruiser motorhome w/6.8 liter v10 is rated to tow 3500 lbs.  is a 3100 lb ranger pushing the envelope?  what type of permanent hitch best to mount on ranger?

Answer
John,

My directory shows that a 1992 (I guessed) Ford Ranger 2WD and 4WD with a 5-speed would require a driveshaft disconnect.

I don't think you are pushing the envalope (assuming the 3100 lbs is what you found by weighing the truck).  Keep in mind that you will need to weigh the truck with a full tank of gas and stay in the truck while it is being weighed.  This will leave room for the baseplate and towbar in your numbers.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'permanent hitch'.  But I sell and install tow bars and baseplates from Roadmaster, Demco and Blue Ox and have had good results from all three makers.  Each system is different and you need to find out what will work for your needs.

Will you be hooking up the truck alone?
Are you physically able to move around a 60lb tow bar or would you be looking at an aluminum bar?
Will you be passing through states where brakes will be required?

The decisions are almost endless.

Best of luck,
