Towing Issues: Towing Issue, long periods of time, tow companies

Question
Hi I am a resident in Fresno, Ca. My situation is this- My boyfriend parks his car in front of my house every day. He doesn't drive it often because he has another car at his place. Recently we got a notice that the license plate is not showing and that if we dont move within 72 hours it will be towed. The tire position is outlined to be sure. We took off the cover so the license plate and everything was visible and we move the car and recently moved it back. This all occured last week. Yesterday he drove the car and parked right in front of my house again. Today we see more chalk lines, but no notice. The car is in mint condition- tags are not expired - and he has my permission and my parents permission to park there. There are no signs for limited time parking or permit parking only - it is just in a regular neighborhood right in front of my house that is not in anyones way or anything. Can they tow it?

Answer
Lina,
It probably depends on where you live. Try to find out what your neighborhood laws are regarding residential street parking. I know that in San Diego one has 72 hours to move his or her vehicle before it can be towed. I'm not sure about Fresno. Obviously somebody at the city has a problem with your boyfriend's car being parked in front of your house for long periods of time. He may just need to make sure that his car gets moved around periodically and that the license plates are visible. Who was the notice from? You may try to contact them and let them know that you are addressing the issue. Perhaps they'll leave you alone. But do whatever you can to prevent the car from being towed...the tow companies are absolutely no fun to deal with and you'll never hear the end of it! Good luck.
