Towing Issues: Towing Fees, tow operators, personal belongings

My car was towed yesterday by the police, Can the towing company hold my vehicle if I do not have the full amount to retrieve my car?  The rates go up daily which puts me in a deeper hole.

Yes, they absolutely can. And some tow operators will stop at nothing to lead you to believe that they have sold your car, or that it's been moved and they don't know where it is, etc. Some tow operators will attempt to keep all the money they made by selling your car...money that's yours. Stay on top of them. Make absolutely sure that your vehicle is in the lot it was towed to, and that you are granted access to your car so that you may retrieve personal belongings left inside the vehicle.
Are you in California? It would help to know a little more about what happened, how much your vehicle is worth, etc., so that I may better answer some of your questions.
