Towing Issues: to lock or not to lock?, jeep cherokee 4wd, pivot points

Question
some say lock the steering wheel and say not to.

what should I do, and if you have the time, why?
Also, why do some tow dollys have a pivot and is it ok to lock the wheel tray in position so it does not pivot?

towing a 92 jeep cherokee 4wd front wheels on the dolly with the driveline disconnected.

Thanks

Answer
While the front wheels being on the dolly  allowing for the vehicle to be towed without worry about the steering turning, I would lock the steering. The tray will pivot on its own helping with turns.   Now the tray itself, some of them require that it be unlocked and some want it locked, so that it can turn abit.  But some of them will cause the fenders to rub when turned and unlocked.. It depends on how the unit is set up.

Basic principle is the less pivot points the better off it is .. That way you do not have wild side to side motions while going down the road.

Pulling the driveline is smart and practice so it does not allow for the potential of transmission / transfer case damage.
