Towing Issues: towing, tow truck operators, commercial drivers license

Question
Hello,
I am researching the responsibility of tow truck operators in New York State. Do you know if their are statues, rules or a manual for New York State pertaining to the proper proedures that a commercial tow company must follow when towing a vehicle?
Thank you for your time.

Answer
well this is a complicated answer for your research.

First of all,  you would have to comply with Federal Department of Transportation rules and regulations dealing with Hours of service, qualifications of drivers, medical certification of drivers to name a few things.

Then from what I understand New York State drivers licences have a special endorcement on the commercial drivers license (CDL) for tow trucks.  This license also covers the class (sizes and capacity ) of the tow trucks.

Then places like New York City, has specific licenses and requirements for tow truck drivers and companies..

And if you tow on the New York Thruway, then you have an additonal set of rules and regulations.

NOW some local citys, counties and even some states are now requiring certifications of operators in order to be able to tow for police departments.

THEN there are the various rules and requlations for towing for law enforcement agencies.

The question is a bit general, but any good internet search will produce some of the information which you are looking for ... Look under New York towing laws,  and things like that..

New York also has several towing associations where you might find more information.

if you could be a bit more specific on what exactly you are looking for in the way for information. I would be more than glad to help you .
