Towing Issues: towing, gmc savana, weight distribution hitch

Question
I own a 1998 GMC Savana 1500 Explorer Limited conversion van. I am trying to tow a 1993 26' Prowler travel trailer. I am not sure of the weight of the trailer.I have towed the trailer for up to 200 miles at one trip. The problem I am having is somewhat of a struggle pulling the trailer. I pull the trailer driving in third gear. It has a 5.0 liter V-8 engine. I was wondering if this vehicle is adequate to pull my trailer. Is pulling it in third gear correct? Is a transmission cooler necessary? I have the weight distribution hitch, torsion bars, and sway bars. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your time and advise. CJT.

Answer
well  if you have an overdrive you are good in getting out of it to tow with, but for any extended trips you will risk damage to the trans..

the van is 1/2 ton, which given the fact its also a converson van means its heavier than a regular van.

Your trailer is most likely in the area of 1700 pounds easy.  that is alot of weight to move with that engine.. I think you are headed to trouble..

Keep in mind though that some vehicles can handle it with proper equipment, and transmission coolers help alot

Check with some local RV dealers and service centers, talk to the local trasnsmission shop they will also be of help.
