Toyota Repair: rack and pinion

Question
i am working on a 2006 toyota corrolla ce auto trans i am replacing the rack and pinion and the information i have found is a bit confusing. i have the engine suspended the tie rod ends disconnected.plastic covers lh and rh removed.directions i have read say to remove the front exhaust pipe but it seems the engine pipe goes all the way to the back of the vehicle. in addition does the x-member get completely removed. if there is a breakdown showing the breakdown of each step possibly with diagrams it might make the procedure easier to follow. thanks for your help.

Answer
I would suggest that you drop the subframe with the steering unit attached, I think I have replaced some without doing that but it may be easier for you to try it that way. After disconnecting everything and removing the steering gear mounts, I was always able to twist and pull it out toward one side.
