Toyota Repair: 1988 Toyota P/up engine swap

Hey: I have a 1988 SR5 Toyota 4X4 extended cab pickup. Comes with a 6 cyl. Just blew a head gasket. Wondered weather I could switch out current engine for a 4 cyl and keep current auto trans, 4X4 set up? Is that doable. Besides overheating, this thing sucks the gas. Thanks for help. MR

As far as I know the transmissions are the same except for the bell housing , the real problem you are facing is the difference between the electronics of the V6 versus the 4 cylinder, you would have to change over all the wiring and computer etc to make the 4 cylinder work
