Toyota Repair: 1992 SC300, r 134 freon, ac compressors

Question
Hi Ted,

I just got my Lexus and LOVE it, but the AC isn't working and the pulley rattles.  What AC Compressors are compatible with a 92 SC300?  I know it uses R12.  I was looking for a used one and can find several SC400 ones, but I don't know what is and what isn't compatible.....can you help?

Cheers

Darren

Answer
The only toyota that used the straight six engine was the Supra of the same year, there were a lot more sc300 built than supras, the best advise I can give is to get a compressor that is specific to this engine and your sc300. The R-12 system has been discontinued since 1994 and the freon is not sold to the general public anymore and may not be available depending on your location, most R-12 systems were retrofitted to the now used R-134 freon, the changeover is simple and a kit can be obtained at most autoparts suppliers.
