Toyota Repair: Toyota Starter, toyota camry, electrical problem

Question
Hi Ted,

I have a 2002 4 cylinder Toyota Camry with a new battery. However, sometimes when I try to start, nothing happens--no noise, no cranking. Could this be the starter or other electrical problem? It never happens in the morning when the engine is cold, just sometimes later after driving. Any ideas?

Thank you very much!

Answer
If there is a single clicking noise heard when turning to the start position the starter is bad, if this is not the case and it's an automatic transmission then I would inspect the nutral start switch located on the side of the transmission near the radiator, it is bolted to the transmission where the shift selector goes, check the connector for corrosion and a good connection, it may be necessary to replace this switch.
