Toyota Repair: Toyota 97 Camry LE V6 - Trac Off light, toyota camry, generic code

Question
I have a '97 Toyota Camry with about 93,000 miles on it. My question is about the Trac Off light, but the following background info might be relevant. For the last few years, the check engine light has come on and off. I've had it checked 3 times, and it's always P0420, that the catalyst efficiency is below threshold. I had an off-brand catalytic converter installed about 5 years ago... As one mechanic said, it's not clear whether the converter is really bad or whether the computer doesn't get along with the off-brand part. In any case, the check engine light has been on for quite some time.

About two months ago, while making a left turn from a complete stop, the car lurched several times (to the point where I thought the car might stall in the middle of the road) and the TRAC OFF light turned on. It was on a warm, dry day -- no water/ice, etc on the road. The car has since driven perfectly fine, but the TRAC OFF light won't turn off.

Do you have thoughts on what the problem could be? I want to sell this car, so I obviously don't want to spend a lot of money either diagnosing or fixing it.  But I also want to be fair to potential buyers. Do you think I would get enough information from a generic code read at Autozone to get an idea of the problem, or do you think I need to take it to a mechanic?

Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
Autozone etc can only get engine control codes but you may want to start there, if the check engine light is still staying on and even if it goes off there are probably some codes in the computer, anytime this happens it will also turn the trac light on, have them scan the computer and let me know what codes they find.
