Toyota Repair: Matrix transmission, auto transmissions, remanufactured units

Question
I have a 2004 Matrix 5 speed with 90k miles When I was on the thruway it would go from 4th and 5th into neutral The best opinion
I have is that the tranny has to be rebuilt

Would you rebuild it put a junkyard one in o r just drivve it till it dies

There are hundreds of accounts on the net of 04 Matrix transmissions going early but Toyota will not admit it just look at Edmunds
If it is a design flaw and I rebuild it will the samer thing happen again

Answer
I'm not aware of any chronic transmission problems with the Matrix. Before I would replace/rebuild the transmission I would have the Toyota dealer look at it and check for any diagnostic codes, it may be an electronic control problem rather than a mechanical problem.
If the transmission does need to be replaced, I would consider a used one, Toyota dealers do not rebuilt or repair auto transmissions anymore due to their complexity, they are sold as remanufactured units, I always discourage people from having a transmission rebuilt because it can end up costing more than a reman one after all the labor and parts are added up not to mention problems that may occur after the repair.
