Toyota Repair: TACOMA 2.7 - 4 cyl......problems ?, valve problems, hi ed

Question
hi Ed,
..Gary here in Oklahoma

any problems with this engine...1996&1997
believe they were standard on 4X4 tacoma's ?

Found a  pretty nice '97 4X4, 5sd, extended cab... with 110K..kind of scared of that "newish" 2.7 ..

if?  what besides timing belt at 100K ?

seems the 2.4's were really good !

thanks in advance, G

Answer
This engine uses a timing chain which lasts a long time, should not ever need replacement. Other than some valve problems they are pretty reliable, the valves tend to tighten up and if not adjusted at about 60,000 miles can lead to leaking valves. Before byuing it I would have the compression tested to make sure there is no problem there.
