Toyota Repair: 2001 Solara 4-Cyl., 5-Speed Manual, shift linkage, clunk

Question
Hello, just purchased this car with 127K due to excellent
reviews and condition of the vehicle *very* clean.  I had it
checked by my mechanic, who advised it is in top shape, but
does need shifter linkage bushings changed.  Will this fix a
downshift from 5th to 4th inability, and slight whine when
in 4th gear?  1st, 2nd are VERY smooth and quiet, while a
delay is required to avoid a grind from 2nd to 3rd and a
slight "clunk" from 3rd to 4th.  4th to 5th is very smooth,
but cannot hit 4th from 5th on the downshift without going
to 3rd first - not good.  They assured me for approx. $300
they could take care of this -- not the transmission?  THANK
YOU!!

Answer
If a delay is required from 2nd to 3rd to avoid grinding then that indicates a problem with the transmission, worn shift sleeve, synchro ring etc, In my opinion this transmission has some problems, if they are sure there is a problem with the shift linkage then have them repair it but only if they agree that you will pay only if it fixes the problem, not charge you $300 and then tell you sorry, now you need a transmission. Personally, I think the car is being sold  because of this problem with the seller being aware of it.
