Toyota Repair: toyota vehicle speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor, toyota 4runner

Question
1992 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L V6 3VZE engine 4WD automatic transmission  VIN# JT3VN39W3N0090188  200+K miles
Had a/t problem; 4Runner stopped moving. long story made short, retaining ring broke in the transfer case allowing movement of the bearings and it tore itself up, a shop replaced worn clutch plates(?) in the a/t and rebuilt the transfer case. less than 2 weeks later after getting it back the speedometer stops working, o/d light came on and off; took it back to the shop, they say it's the backup vehicle speed sensor (not their fault). What is the part no. for VSS, where is it located (they say in the dash), and how much does a new one cost?  Thanks for your help. les

Answer
There are two speed sensors, one is on the transmission and one is in the speedometer, it could be either one causing the problem but it's more likely the one in the transmission, try replacing it first it's a lot cheaper than replacing the speedometer.
