Toyota Repair: Car wont start, emission control system, toyota avalon

Question
Hi....I have a 1997 Toyota Avalon XL. I bought it used nearly 5 yrs ago. It has over 220,000 miles. I love my Avalon but Monday (Sept 27th) my check engine light came on. The car didn't run any different. Tues (Sept 28th) it started fine/ran fine. I went to the store and when I turned the key, it just ticked. I tried again and it hesitated but turned over. It still ran fine. Wed (Sept 29th) I turned the key and got one 'tick' but it wouldn't start. It is currently doing the same thing. All lights are bright & radio works but the car will not start. I simply get one 'tick' and that's it. There is no battery drain when I try to start it. I thought alternator at first but now I'm thinking Starter or ignition switch. I must add that I have done nothing to this car in repair other than brakes and oil changes. She has been getting between 32-35mpg for last 6 months or so (prior to that, I was only getting 18mpg.....don't have a clue why the huge increase in gas mileage). I am wondering if you might know if its the Starter or Ignition Switch or something else. I have owned Toyota's prior (1991 Corolla w/256,000 miles when I got rid of it and 1996 Camry 5-speed w/under 100,000 miles on it when I got in accident 5 yrs ago and now my 97 Avalon.....Years ago I owned a 79 Supra......I am a Toyota fanatic) and never experienced this particular problem. I am baffled and need help. Thank you ahead of time for your help.

Answer
The no start/clicking is most likely due to a bad starter, it's a common problem. This would'nt turn the check engine light on so there may be another problem most likely with the emission control system so you should have it checked for that eventually.
Most places like autozone, advance auto etc will usually get the diagnostic codes for you at no charge, then you can let me know what those are and I can help with that but in the meantime I think your starter needs to be replaced.
