Toyota Repair: 96 Toyota Camry 2.2 - intake valves stuck open, toyota camry, zero compression

Question
Hi Ted,  My son has a 96 camry 2.2l with approx 200K on it. It recently had a thermostat problem and overheated - not sure how long he drove it.  Fixed the thermostat and now the engine only runs on 2 cylinders.  #2 and #4 have zero compression.  I removed the valve cover and it is obvious that 2 of the intake valves are not closing all the way.  What would you guess the problem is and what would you recommend?  Thanks for the help.

Answer
It sounds like the valves may have overheated to the point where they got stuck. You can try removing the camshafts and the valve springs and see if the valves can be freed up, there is also a chance that the valve springs are weak or broken, other than that the head will probably have to be removed.
