Toyota Repair: idle, toyota celica, throttle control

Question
Vince, I have a 1987 Toyota celica GT, the challenge is with idling, the car idle's ok until I turn AC on, then goes up and down and I smell gasoline, can help me with this issue, thank you.

Answer
How often is the idle changing and by how much?  When the A/C clutch engages this puts a strain on the engine.  The throttle control system compensates for this by raising the engine rpm slightly (~100 rpms).  When the A/C clutch disengages, the load is removed and the engine rpm should return to normal idle.
If this evolution is occuring frequently, that indicates your A/C clutch is engaging/disengaging often.  This is indicative of an A/C problem (low charge, plugged drier, etc.).

Hope this helps.
