Toyota Repair: 1993 Previa Cruise Control Problem, jumper wire, combination meter

Question
1993 Previa
2WD
182,000 mi
Has no ABS system.

Like several other Previa and truck owners, my cruise control began switching off, blinking the cruise light 5 times.  I have to restart the engine before it will allow another attempt at setting the cruise.  Over the course of about 5 years, it gradually got worse.  I have noticed that leaving the cruise control enabled for about 30 minutes on the road prior to setting, seemed to extend the length of time it would work.  But, now now it immediately faults, blinking 5 times as soon as I try to set it.  I appreciate the answers I found on the allexperts website concerning the question asked about the cruise control on a Toyota Pickup, as this sounds similar to my Previa problem.  I have already tested the stop switch circuit continuity through the cruise control servo clutch -- it is good.  I will check my brake lights when I get the battery re-connected.  My question is this: if I can't determine the problem, how do I retrieve the cruise control fault code?

Thanks,
David

position, and keep it.

combination meter.
(e) Turn the SET/COAST switch or RES/ACC switch off.
(f) Meet the conditions listed below.
(g) Read the diagnostic trouble code on the cruise
control indicator light.
