Toyota Repair: Brake Lights keep blowing fuse, brake light switch, toyota avalon

Question
QUESTION: Thanks Ted for your earlier advice.  It helped me to replace the brake light switch but unfortunately, that wasn't the problem.  The fuse is blowing as soon as I step on the brake.  Obviously there is a short but I am struggling to find it.  The brake lights are not blowing so I am thinking the short is before the light assembly.  Any suggestions as to how to locate the short?

ANSWER: Disconnect all the connections on both sides of the wire harness to the tail light assemblies and see if the fuse still blows, if not then there is a short at the rear where the tail lights are , reconnect one side at a time and determine which side is causing the problem.

QUESTION: 1996 toyota avalon

Answer
The avalon uses a tail light relay located in the trunk on the left side behind the carpeting, move the carpet out of the way and locate the relay mounted to the metal brace near the inner fender area, disconnect the wire harness from it, if the fuse stops blowing the short is in the wiring between there and the tail lights, a common problem is that the relay burns out, another problem may be that the wiring inside the small harness that runs along the left trunk hinge is the cause, these have a problem with the wires seperating inside the harness and causing the ground wires to short the tail light or brakelight wires, the harness can be cut open to check for this.
