Toyota Repair: 1995 toyota, toyota 4 runner, pre purchase inspection

Question
Hi. I'm thinking about buying a 1995 Toyota 4 runner (6 cyl.) with 97000 miles.I don't think the timing belt has ever been changed. Is it due? And roughly what should that cost?  Any advice on anything else i should check on or ask about would be a great help. Thanks

Answer
The timing belt was due at 60,000 miles so it may have already been replaced but it needs to be checked anyway. The cost for the belt is around $350 parts and labor, I would advice to have the truck inspected by a toyota dealer or a repair shop before buying it, this is known as a pre-purchase inspection and you should get a printout of the condition of the vehicle and anything that needs attention, this would be at your expense and the seller would have to agree for you to do so but this may save you a lot of headaches down the road, keep in mind that most vehicles are privately sold because there is something major wrong or about to go wrong or they were involved in an accident, not always but most of the time.
