Toyota Repair: 2001 Toyota Tundra, torque converters, mileage limit

Question
I Have a 2001 toyota tundra 4wd and i have 57,000 miles and the other day i parked my truck and it shut off automatically i started it back up and it shut off again the check engine light and the A/T oil temp light came on i had to get it towed to the local toyota dealership and they say that the torque converter lock-up and threw metal messing up the transmission is this possible and i called toyota rep and they said that the miles where good on warranty but they couldn't pay for any because it is a 2001 please let me know i am only 19 years old working full time and going to school full time and i cant afford to much to fix that's why i committed to buying a toyota because they are so reliable

Answer
Unfortunately there have been some problems in the past with the torque converters coming apart and then metal particles get into the rest of the transmission and toyota is aware of this. The warranty period on the transmission is 5yrs/60,000 miles which means it's out of warranty. Since it's within the mileage limit talk to the dealer manager or service director to see if toyota is willing to assist in some way, I'm not making any guarantees but in some cases they will do so if the truck was maintained and there are service records to prove that. Do you have any kind of extended warranty coverage?
