Toyota Repair: alternator failure, oil filler cap, wd 40

Question
The kid at the garage forgot to put the oil filler cap back on, and I lost 2
quarts of oil all over the engine compartment.  My alternator failed the next
day, about 130 miles from home.  The belts were also soaked with oil.
Could this have caused the alternator to fail?  The car is a 1990 Corolla DX.
I was able to drive about 125 miles, at night, with the battery before the
lights went dim.

Answer
Ned,
First of all the garage is responsible for this!

I see issues like this happen a lot with quick oil change places,
not enough oil installed, too much oil installed, etc. I always
tell people double check the oil level and cap before you drive off.
Your lucky the engine didn't run out of oil.

Oil in the alternator will cause it to fail. Oil on the belt would
cause it to slip and the alternator would not charge properly.

I have successfully sprayed a whole can of WD-40 in an alternator
and washed the oil out of it and cleaned the belt off with WD-40.
WD-40 is a contact and electrical cleaner and it washes away oil.
