Toyota Repair: timing, crankshaft pulley, compression stroke


Question
with head,intake & distibuter removed,and timing lost, and without removing crankshaft pulley & timing cover, how can i make sure #1 piston is TDC on compression stroke?   have no testers available.

I don't understand. Why would you need to know at this point.
when you put the head back on and the timing belt with the crank
pointer lined up and the cam mark lined up up, you rotate the
motor twice clockwise with the socket on the crank bolt and the pointers should line up
