Toyota Repair: toyota tercel, toyota tercel, connecting rod

Question
i have a 1.5 liter sohc toyota tercel manual 4 speed i had a problem where the connecting rod end cap broke off. i want to just replace the cap piece but everybody tells me i need to replace the whole connecting rod but there is no damage too it and i am very low on money they also said the crank could be messed up so if you could give me tips on looking for problems with the crank which it doesn't look damaged at all in any way its straight no damage where the connecting rod came off or nothing what should i do and how can i set the timing up on it when i put it back together????

Answer
The connecting rod cap is not available seperately, it only comes with another connecting rod, both pieces are matched at the manufacturer. If the bearing journal on the crankshaft shows no signs of damage then the crank doesn't need to be replaced. If you're going to take the engine apart let me know when you are going to put it back together and I can tell you how to set the timing then.
