Steering Column Repair: wiring in steering column, pontiac bonneville sse, airbag warning light

Question
I have a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville SSE with steering column problem.  The airbag warning light is on because there is no connectivity to the drivers side air bag module and the radio controls on the steering wheel do not work.   The horn, tilt, blinkers, etc all work fine.  Is this something that can be repaired or would it require replacing the steering column?
thank you
Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,
I'm not sure what you mean by no connectivity on the airbag. Has the wiring been cut?

Have you checked all your wiring on the column? If everything looks OK and the connector seem good the horn ring on this particular model can cause the problem. Then too the switches on the steering wheel are know to short out. You will have to troubleshoot the problem starting at the switch (check fuses too). There are two or 3 screws on the backside of the steering wheel that hold the center assembly on to the wheel. Once you remove them and remove the control assembly you can then check your wiring and work your way down the column.
So, to answer your question you should not have to replace the whole steering column. Find the problem with the one you have. My guess without knowing the history of the column is that the switches or horn/control ring is going to be your culprit. Either of these parts can be found locally.
Have a great day!
