Toyota Repair: 1997 RAV 4 Ignition key will not go past ACC position, wd 40, steering wheel

Question
We could not start our 1997 RAV 4 -2 wheel drive this morning.  The key would
not go past the ACC position.  What do you think the problem is?  What are the
possible solutions and what do you think it would cost to fix the problem?
Please advise.  Thank you very much in advance for your consideration

Answer
Frank,
It would help if I knew how many miles on the vehicle.
Have you tried rocking the steering wheel back and forth while
you try turning the key? Next thing is get a can of WD-40 and stick the red capilary in the switch and squirt a good amount in there,
this has worked for me on a few occations. The lock is worn and the pin that locks the steering wheel is binding. The ignition switch must be replaced.
