Toyota Repair: Engine Light lit on Control Panel, engine misfire, scantool

Question
98 4-Runner

Have a issue with the Engine Led on Control panel - 220 KM on engine. I have had regular oil changes however not complete maintenace. Sometimes the Engine idles rough. When I acclerate the engine light flashes most of the time constant. Some occasions the light goes off but comes back on. What is the MAF. Have bot changed spark plugs and air filter good. Could it be the Catalac Converter.

Answer
The engine light flashing normally indicates that there is an engine misfire, driving it for too long in this conditionw will damage the cat converter. This should be diagnosed by connecting a diagnostic scantool to the onboard computer to retreive the trouble codes to isolate which cilynder has the misfire, these engines have common problems with the igniter coils, there are three on the right bank of the engine, each coil fires two cylinders, if there is a random multiple misfire code(PO300)accompanied by one or more codes such as 301, 304 then it's one of the coils, this can be verified by switching the suspected coil to another cylinder to see if the misfire changes location, this requires using the scantool to view live data, there have also been some cases of fuel injector failure, so if it's not an electrical misfire and is only a single misfire code a injector can be the cause. I would recommend to inspect the spark plugs first, I thought they were replaced already, not sure because of the typo(bot)could mean not/or both. I assume it's "not", anyway this should steer you in the right direction.
