Nissan Repair: 95 Nissan Maxima Headlights Dimming, nissan maxima, headlight switch

Question
I purchased my 95' Nissan Maxima 5 years ago and each time I apply the brakes my headlights will dim. This happens if I am driving or parked. I am wondering if this is a symptom of somthing that is failing and will cause me future problems.  Thank You.

Answer
Cheri,

The headlight switch is getting worn.  All the power routes through this switch.  You see, there is really not a load sufficent from the four bulbs to cause the dimming.  Now, be sure that your car is putting out 14 volts or close when running to make sure that the alternator does not have a field blown.  There are three and if you loose one the alternator will still keep the car running but when headlights are on there is a drain and if something else like brakes are applied the lights will dim.  So, check the alternator first.  If that is fine and the brake bulbs are good and the sockets are not corroded then replace the headlight switch.
