in what direction do i turn the drum adjuster to release the drum from the shoes.

Answer
Turn it downward, there is a small adjusting lever which engages the adjusting wheel allowing upward movement only to tighten the ajustment so you will need to put a small screwdriver in to release the spring loaded lever so that the adjusting wheel can be turned the opposite way to release the brake shoes.
