Toyota Repair: 98 Camry Check Engine Light, costly repair, battery cable

Question
My 98 Camry has 153,000 miles.  The check engine light came on back in May and then went off after a couple of weeks.  Same thing happen in July.  Now it just came back on again. What could happen if I just ingnore it?  I hate to bring it in and find out I've got a costly repair.

Answer
Your check engine light can illuminate for serious problems but mostly they light up for smog reasons. Disconnect the negative side battery cable for a total of 60 seconds, then reconnect it.

Now that you just erased the "soft code" from the ECU, drive the car and see if the check engine light re-appears.
