Toyota Repair: routine maintenance on older Camry with low miles, proper preventative maintenance, timing belts

Question
Hi Tim --

My grandfather gave me a 1992 Camry with only 47,000 miles on it a year ago. It's in great condition and he kept it up well, did all the scheduled maintenance. Now it is at 60,000 miles, and I understand this is a time when it is due for a lot of routine maintenance. However, I can't find maintenance tables for a car of that age online. Also, I know because some of the parts may have aged beyond their miles (because it has such low miles for its age), that might be an issue too. Do you know what Toyota suggests be done at 60,000 miles for this car?

Thanks a lot!
Faith

Answer
Hi Faith,
First of all I don't know if it's a 4 or 6 cylinder or automatic or 5 speed.
When a vehicle is not driven very much over many years certain
items can deteriorate and should be replaced.
Inspect all hoses and belts, they should be replaced and are fairly inexpensive. Inspect the air filter (the housing
might have had mice living in it), all ignition wires for mice teeth
marks. I would replace spark plugs (again easy and inexpensive).

Even though timing belts on Camrys last well over 100k and the recommended mile change is 80k or so I would have it changed
or your vehicle immediately, its the time factor.

Of course tires and battery should be inspected and tested.
A 92 Camry will last years with proper preventative maintenance.

Good luck,
Tim
