Toyota Repair: Camry wont fire overnight, failure issues, fluid leak

Question
Tim,

I have a 93 Camry 4 Cyl. with approx 180k miles. Runs good, has a few quirks, but by and large dependable. Used it last night running errands, tried to leave for work in the morning and turns over good but won't start. Tried to listen for fuel pump, but couldn't hear it when moved to on position and also checked for spark by removing plug and having the wife turn it over.

It doesn't look like any spark at all. Seems to be a dead ignition issue, but what is most likely reason for failure?  I can do the distributor cap check, and rotor, but is there an ignition module or main relay that has failure issues? The car has been regularly serviced to get to 180k miles so I'd like to fix it and shoot for 200k, provided the small tranny fluid leak at the main seal doesn't worsen.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jerry M.

Answer
Hi Jerry,
This is a common problem in that high mile range. I've replaced
many distributors on those cars. Its the ignition module in the distributor. They are next to impossible to replace, the whole
distributor must be dismantled and shaft removed and pressed fitted
back in. Best thing to do is buy a used distributor from a junk yard. (about $75 to $100). Replacing the distributor only takes about 15 minutes.

Good luck,

Tim
