Nissan Repair: catalyst repair?, nissan maxima, o2 sensors

Question
Hey Calvin,
Thanks in advance....so I have a 96 Nissan Maxima.  Its had a pulsing ,jerking sensation when being accelerated between 5-50 mph.   So I've had a couple of things fixed on it, still didn't fix it. However now, the code that comes up is the EGR, o2 sensor and the catalytic converter?  I've heard how expensive some of that can be, is it guaranteed that fixing any of that will stop the jerking in the car? I haven't brought it to a auto shop yet ,a mechanic in our complex was able to get the code. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Jen -

Can you get me the exact code? The O2 sensors are usually P1130's. That way I can have a starting point.

Yes, it is expensive, and in my opinion, I do not think that replacing it will solve your car's performance. Something is making the car run rough, and in turn, illuminating the check engine light. In other words, solve the cause, and the sensors will no longer detect malfunction, and the light should reset.

Start with a basic tune up. When was the last time it was done? Spark plug, cap and rotor, maybe even spark plug wires.

Let me know
aloha
