Toyota Repair: In tank fuel pump wiring, electric fuel pump, clean air act

Question
I am replacing the fuel pump on a 92 toyota pickup and it is a in-tank pump. The new pump connector is not the same so I have to splice the wires INSIDE the gas tank. Is this safe. It appears that the connector itself is submerged in gas. Does this not short the wiring? What prevents this from exploding? I am nervous doing this but there is no other way around it. Any suggestions/explanations.

Thanks

Answer
The clean air act of 1990 required all vehicles sold in the USA to come standard with fuel injection. Due to this fact, the Toyota TCCS system is equipped with an electric fuel pump capable of 90PSI. The entire fuel pump unit is inside the fuel tank and submerged in fuel just like you stated. This does not cause a fire risk because there is not the correct ratio of fuel, ignition and oxygen (the three basic components of fire). This fuel system is completely safe. In regard to your problem, did you buy a universal or aftermarket pump? I would not recommend that you cut the original wiring harness for the fuel pump. If you buy an OEM fuel pump, the connector will be identical to yours.
