Toyota Repair: help me please!, toyota 4runner, poor shape

Question
Hi i will beging by telling you a story. I borrow my Mother in law's Car it is a 97 toyota 4runner special edition full loaded etc.... I ran the car for 17 Highways miles at speeds of 50-70 mph. i was doing 55 when i heard  a bang or cracking noise at the bottom of the car and the car died on me few seconds later.i was on the left lane ,so i had to immediately pull over on the left side of the road.
i tried restarding it. and it would turn off if i did not hold the gas. at the same time u could hear a screach sound. now a mechanic had inspect the vehicle he said the engine blew. my question is that a problem that i caused or was the car in poor shape and by me driven i caused it ?
is it my fault?

ps car has 140k miles

Answer
I don't have any way of knowing what caused this to happen but I have someone else look at this to see if what that mechanic is telling you is true. Engine failures normally happen because there is a mechanical malfunction and not the driver's fault, have it checked by somone else bacause it may be something else like a water pump failure or timing belt.
