Toyota Repair: 1991 toyota camry will not engage reverse (grinding) very bad, 1991 toyota camry, toyota camry

Question
The engine run great and  will start in park and in neutral.  I can shift in all
gears except reverse, it makes a grinding noise  like it can't engage.  Prior to
this event,  some mornings  when you stop the car before it had a chance to
warm up good,  it would not start until  you  push the shifter forward,  as if it
was not in park.  If you could think of anything that would be helpful, I really  
would appreciate it.

This car uses a shifter cable that is attached to the shifter inside the center console and to the transmission check to see that the cable is attached at the transmission and is not loose on the shift selector lever, it's located on the front near the radiator.
