Toyota Repair: 1997 Lexus ES300 Code 1705, copper windings, 1997 lexus es300

Question
My car was hesitating when driving in reverse, off and on for months like it just didn't want to go.  Now, all of a sudden when trying to go forward it hesitates to the point that it feels like I am driving with the emergency break on.  It won't go above 30 mph and it starts to have a burning smell.  The check engine light came on but went off after a while.  Parked it for a while and it acts like it is going to run okay for a couple minutes, so drove it to a small town auto repair place nearest I could find who ran code diagnostics and it said 1705.  He said it is the revolution sensor but no one else seems to ever have heard of this.  Does this sound right or do you think it is something else?  We drove the car for about 25 minutes when it first happened to get to a safe place.  The car has 198,000 miles and still looks almost new.  Worth trying to save.  Thanks!

Answer
This code indicates a problem with the direct clutch speed sensor NC2, according to the repair manual there are three possible trouble areas, the electrical circuit between the sensor and the ECM, the speed sensor itself or the ECM. I have never seen an ECM cause this problem so I'm going to exclude it at this time, wiring problems are not common either so that leaves the speed sensor, this sensor is located directly on top of the transmission, it's alittle hard to get to because there is stuff in the way, the sensor should be removed for a visual inspection, check for any copper windings that may have come out or any metal particles that may be attached to the magnetic end of the sensor, a lot of metal particles indicate a major transmission problem, if that's not the case replace the sensor and clear the DTC and then see if it fixed the problem.
