Toyota Repair: 4RUNNER, drive belts, rear brakes

Question
Hey Ted, I just purchased a 2002 4runner from my company that was a salesman's company vehicle. It has 299,985 miles on it but looks and runs like it was just purchased last week. I was wondering what I could check or do to make sure it stays like this since it has soo many miles?  Suggestions?  It doesnt have a problem right now, but maybe there is some things you would recomend so it doesnt devolope one.  Thanks

Answer
Whatever problems may develop depend on how it was maintained in the past, you could ask a toyota dealer to see if they can run a repair history report, they may do it at no charge or you could also pay a fee($85-100)to have a service tech do a complete inspection for you, to locate any potential or existing problem areas. Here are a few areas for concern: the timing belt should have been replaced every90,000 miles, the water pumps have a tendency to leak after about 60,000 miles, the drive belts tend to crack after about 60k,the brakes in the front last about 30-50k depending on driving conditions, the rear brakes should be inspected at this time. The engine and transmission have no chronic problems however the fluid should be inspected, it may need to be changed as well as the coolant, if very little of those items were dealt with in the past you may be looking at some expense in the near future. You can also get a pretty good history directly online at carfax.com, they carge a small fee.
