Toyota Repair: 1998 Camry stalling and surging, coolant temperature sensor, radiator coolant

Question
Hi,
I have a 98 camry, auto, 4 cyl. with 129,000 miles.  For about the last three weeks it has been giving me trouble.  First it started stalling out when I would come to a stop.  When this happened I could tell it was idleing down and about to cut off and I would try to give it gas but it would stall out anyway.  It doesn't do it every time I drive though.  Now its started to surge occasionally when I am driving and also when this happens it wants to cut off when I come to a stop but if put one foot on the brake and one on the gas pedal I can keep it running. Any ideas?  Thanks so much.

Answer
Robin,
This could be a lot of different things and its difficult to
solve a problem long distance. Make sure the radiator coolant
is full. If not, the coolant temperature sensor will get a false
reading. Make sure the rubber air intake from the air filter to
the throttle body has no cracks in it and make sure the hose clamps
holding it on are tight.

If above items are OK, it's most likey one of these 2 things; (It would be so easy if I were at the vehicle), anyway,

The coolant temperature sensor on the block is bad and sending false signals back to the ECM. OR most likely the throttle body needs to be cleaned out real good with carb cleaner, like half a spray can. I see this once a month on a Camry.
