Toyota Repair: Replace fuel sending unit, retainer ring, rubber mallet

Question
Hi,

My 2000 Toyota Corolla had fuel gauge stuck at "F" position. I took it to the dealer for diagnostics. I was told I need to replace the fuel sending unit. The parts and labor costs $261. Can I do it myself? I'd appreciate if you can provide instructions if it is not complicated.

Thanks.

Answer
You will need to drop the tank down to access the top of the tank where the threaded ring is located. disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery. Next, disconnect the wire connector that leads to the ECU. Then you will need to loosen the retainer ring (use rubber mallet and chisel or a screwdriver that you don't care about). Remove sending unit and replace with new unit. What ever you do, don't smoke near open fuel fumes!
