Nissan Repair: 2001 Maxima Slow shift into last gear, slow shift, filter screen

Question
QUESTION: Hi - I have automatic 2001 Maxima with 136,000 miles on it.  Recently the car has been expirencing a slow shift into the last gear.  It doesn't seem to slip, but it hits over 60mph before shifting into last year.  It there anything that might need replacing before something major happens?
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Joe -

The first thing I would do is replace the transmission oil and filter screen.

If the problem persists, you will probably have to take it in to overhaul the trans. Is it shifting into the first 2 gears OK? If so, then probably the 3rd gear bands need adjustment/replacing.

Hope this helps

QUESTION: Hi - Thanks for the info.  At what intervals should transmission oil be changed.  I had it done at 111,0000 miles.  The shifting into first 2 gears is ok except for first thing in morning when its cold.  There is slow shift into first and then last gears.  Overhaul of trans sounds expensive.  How much should the replacing of 3rd gear bands be?  Is it worth it or just drive until car dies?

Answer
Hi Joe -

Yes, it is time for the oil change. Try an additive AT205 in addition to the change. Great stuff, and just might solve your problem.

Overhaul is expensive, could be as much as 2K, but still cheaper than a new car -

Let me know and keep me posted after the oil change -
