Toyota Repair: 1996 Camry-Power Door Locks, power door locks, razor blade

Question
QUESTION: Both front door's armrest switches for power door locks not working for lock or unlock. Turning key in both doors will lock and unlock ok.

Since power windows work ok I assume fuse ok since Owners Manual indicates same fuse for both systems.

Is there a relay or wire junction somewhere that could cause this problem?

ANSWER: Ted,
Make sure you check all fuses under hood and
dash driver side lower panel.
some circuits are tied to more then one fuse.
Could be a relay too.

If no luck, let me know, I'll look at schematics.

QUESTION: Hi Tim,

Thanks for your response. Fuses were good but need to revise the symptons for the problem-I had one part wrong.

The rocker switches on the 2 front doors armrests WILL NOT activte "lock" buttons at any of the 4 doors.

Both rocker switches WILL "unlock" all 4 door's locking buttons if buttons were locked manually or by turning key outside in either door.

Turning key at either front door's outside key slot will also lock and unlock all four buttons normally.

I hope problem not buried behind instr panel.

Answer
Ted,

This is one of 2 things. Either a bad rocker switch on drivers
door, or broken wire in harness between the door and car body.
If wire is broke it will be broken between door and body, this is where wires break because the wires are flexing every time the door is opened and closed. With door wide open take a razor blade and slice the the black vinyl protect tubing over the wires horizontally
about 4 inches(when your done you can rap in up with electrical tape). You can repair a broken wire carefully and with patience. I will tell you how if there is a broken wire.
