Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry 92-96 camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, toyota camry

Question
Hi Ted,

I was able to replace the timing belt and I would like to take advantage of this time to replace the camshaft oil seal also.  It looks like it is hard to take it out.  Is there any trick? any special tool? I have no problem on the crankshaft seal.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

Answer
The cam gear has to be removed, it has to be held stationary so that the bolt can be removed, the gear can be held with a special tool or with a chain type wrench which raps around the pulley, the seal can be popped out with a screwdriver, the new seal can be tapped in with a small hammer or you may be able to use a large socket and a prybar to force it into the housing, just make sure it goes in straight, yes there is a special cam seal installation tool, you may be able to locate one at an autoparts store.
