Volkswagen: 1979 Super Beetle, diagnostic charge, seldomly

Question
I had taken the car to the dealership because it seemed to not be
getting any gas.  The next day the dealer called me and notified
me that they had found the problem.  They stated that it needs a
new control module.  They also stated that it would cost me
around $550.00 in Canadian dollars.  They went on to tell me
that It took them 10 hours to diagnose this problem.  They said
they would give me a deal and only charge me $900.00 CA for
the work that they have already performed.

My questions are:

Does this sound correct?
Are they way over on their diagnostic charge?
If I take the car out of the facility right now, is the control
module easily interchanged?
Is the control module the same as an ECM?
I have found control module's online for much less but they
show 3 styles, do you know what the difference is?

Ron, thank you for all your consideration and time.  I appreciate
any feedback you can give.  Have a great week!

Answer
Tyson,

I'd suggest buying the control module online.   You can get one for under $50.00.

The site is

www.thesamba.com

The control module is the same as the ECM, it is also referred to as the "brain".   They are basically all the same,  you can get one for your CA Super Beetle and it will work, no problem

The control module is large silver box with the big plug in it behind your back seat (passenger side).  It is easily removed and replaced.   These seldomly go,  so make sure thier diagnosis is correct.

Let me know how you make out, and don't pay $550.00 CA for that box!
