Toyota Repair: oil leak on 1987 toyota camry, 1987 toyota camry, crankshaft seal

Question
Mr Ritter, I have a 1987 Toyota Camry. It has 246,000 miles on it.  The timing belt was changed at 220,00 miles when the head had to be replaced.  Recently, after a 300 mile trip, I noticed oil covering most of the underside of the car.  It seems to be coming from behind the no 1 timing cover.  I put a can of oil stop leak in it to complete the trip, which greatly reduced the leakage.  It still leaks though and I want to fix it.  My chilton manual does not show where the seal is or what is involved to replace it.  I would like to replace all of the front side seals, and the water pump while I'm in there, but don't want to get into a total engine tear down.  Can you tell me where the seal is and if it is a simple press in to a cover of some sort or the oil pump?  I would appreciate any advice you can give me.  Thank you very much.

Dave H.

Answer
There are three oil seals at the front of the engine, the crankshaft seal the camshaft seal and the oil pump seal, the oil pump has to be removed to get the gear off to replace the seal and the o-ring seal between it and the block. The crankshaft timing gear has to be removed as well as the camshaft gear to replace the other seals.
