Toyota Repair: 1998 Toyota Camry, air control valve, toyota camry

Question

Sometimes I have a problem to start the engine on my 1998 Toyota "Camry" with 4 cylinders, automatic transmission (on a cold engine). It starts and then the power goes off. My friend told me that it might be a problem with the Idle Speed Control (or Idle Control Valve). Please let me know what exactly can cause the problem. Thank you.

Answer
The idle air control valve is a common problem, it can be cleaned by removing the throttle body and then the valve, clean both with spray air intake cleaner and a brush, when all the carbon has been cleaned the valve should work and the idle return to normal, if the valve can not be cleaned it should be replaced, the valve runs about $200 at the toyota dealer for the part only.
