Toyota Repair: 1989 Toyota 4x4 pickup, toyota 4x4 pickup, power steering fluid

Question
My son owns a 1989 Toyota Pickup. It is a single cab 4X4 with a 22RE F/I engine and 5 speed transmission. The power steering fluid is leaking and making a squealing noise. What do I need to do?

Also he wants to install a performance kit that includes a new cam shaft, air intake system, new throttle body and header and larger exhaust system. Are these fairly simple to install by a father and son team

Answer
Check the power steering pump for a leak, they normally leak at the front seal, you can get a reseal kit from the toyota dealer, just replace the front seal and the O-ring under the rear cover of the pump. Replacing the camshaft is not that easy because for one thing the rocker arm assembly has to be removed which is held on by the headbolts, this may cause a headgasket leak, the rest is not that difficult, just follow the directions that come with the parts.
