Toyota Repair: 2001 Toyota Corolla using extra oil, lucas oil additive, piston ring

Question
Dear Sir, My Corolla CE takes two quarts a week driving 300 miles to/from work. Lucas oil additive has been suggested to lower the consumption before going to the mechanic to see what is happeniong inside the engine. And where is the PCV valve located so I can check it to clean or replace it? Sincerely, Peter

Answer
These year model corollas have a tendency to use oil if not poroperly maintained and/or the mileage approaches 100K and beyond, I suspect that there is a piston ring problem or a valve seal problem, maybe both, the engine compression should be tested to see if there is a compression loss past the piston rings, valve seal leakage normally causes blue smoke to emit from the exhaust on cold starts and then goes away, I don't think the PCV valve is the problem, unless the air filter is full of oil, I don't think it even has one, your'e possibly looking at a cpmplete engine overhaul or replacement of the short block with a remanufatured unit.
