Toyota Repair: 1992 Celica Jerking, meter needle, celica

I was driving along the other day and I notice that my celica started to like jerk like hesitate, as the same time I noticed that the rpm meter needle was like jerking also. the check engine like came on then when off. It really scared me. This is a ST automatic trans. with over 200,000 miles on it. Could you tell me some things that I might try I really like my car, and it have been well taken care of. Anytime the check engine light comes on the first thing I always need to know is what the trouble codes are that are stored in the computer, it's the first step that will give me a direction to go in helping to diagnose the problem, any repair shop should be able to get the codes for you and then you could get back to me and let me know what they found and I can help.
